Hey folks. Just wanted to drop you guys a line regarding the "Apex Rex" model. We were ecstatic to have been able to sell out our first pre-production pre-order option with the upcoming Apex Rex model. We sold all five pieces over a weekend. Not too shabby, I'd say.
Anyway, as you know, this was a "pre-order," meaning the model does not actually exist in physical form yet. I had considered the digital model complete, so all that was left was to create the cuts and keys so that the model could be printed and reassembled. My original thought was that I would have the Pre-Production run finished by mid-end of March.
However, things have changed a bit. While looking over the model to determine how to cut it, I found some things that beg my attention. There are just a few details that I want to spend some more time on before considering the piece finished. Apex rex has been in the works for over a year, so I don't feel like it makes a whole lot of sense to send it to print with some aspects that I know I can improve on. I never like to let things go, and it is always hard to say "Finished", but when you see things glaring back at you, you just have to take a breath and choose to spend a little bit more time resolving the issues. The upside is that you will get an even better model in the end.
I now expect more of a mid-late April delivery date for this guy. I know that will be disappointing to some of my customers, but as I said, I am not interested in compromising the quality of the work in the name of an expeditious release. So, it is what it is.
As always, anyone reserves the right to cancel his/her order if they decide that they do not want to wait, but that would be silly- cause this model is gonna be awesome. Also, as a recompense, I have decided to include a 1:75 scale version of Apex Rex with each order. So, you will get a mini massive rex for your desk, or you can stick it to the dashboard of your car.
Also, I have been honing my painting skills, so when we get ready to print your model, you will have the option to upgrade to the built/painted version should the suit your fancy.
So, while we wait, I thought I'd leave you with some detail shots of Apex's battle wounds, scars, and pathologies. The whole idea behind this character is that he is the biggest, baddest guy on the block. Not only is he the biggest, but he is a venerable beast who has been through it... and for all of his scars and damage, he is still here- so, you should see the other guys.
He's got wounds from ceratopsians who tried in vain to stay alive, and all manner of gashes, slashes, and healed wounds from various hapless contenders. Most of his wounds are accompanied by mal-reformed surrounding scales or the physical remnants from infections that Apex was able to suppress with his tenacious immune system.
Take a look at some examples of the hard life of Apex Rex:
