A big storm is on its way to Florida, so I may not have internet access for the next few days. I decided to whip up Vol. 8, so that I can focus on Hurricane preparation. Speaking of preparation...
What do you call a T. rex with no arms and no legs? An "Ampu-T.rex!" I know... classy. Lol.
That or a T.rex getting ready to be a wicked diorama model kit.
Anyway, file prep for "The Rexoning" is now underway.
File preparation includes repairing the "mesh" ( the digital artwork) - filling holes, removing artifacts (random digital anomalies), and hollowing the model out. From there, I must decide where the model needs sectioning to make a viable model kit. Once I have decided how I want to section it, then I have to go about doing just that. Along with cutting the model up, I have to create the means to put it all back together in the real world, A.K.A. creating keys and corresponding receptacles.
I have discussed this in previous installments of the Archosaur Asylum, but I thought it might be cool for you to see some of the process firsthand this time. Below is a short video illustrating a small part of the process. You will get to see how to remove the arms and set them up for use in the final model kit. This is just a small example of some of what needs to be done to get the digital file to kit form. A lot more needs to be done, but this will give you an appreciation for some of the work required beyond creating the original digital sculpture.
I hope you like it. I'd love to know if you enjoy seeing this kind of content or not and if it was too long, too short, or just right. If you are inclined, I'd love some feedback, so please drop a comment or email me. Any feedback is appreciated.
CHECK OUT THE MAKING OF THE REXONING (Vol. 1):
So, "The Rexoning" is in full swing, but I've also got some other irons in the fire. A few things I've got brewing are a diorama involving Dynamoterror, a dromaeosaur based on an illustration by (and in collaboration with) @dinocomissions. The project most likely to be released next is one I have had in the works for some time. YES, it is another T.rex, and probably the last for a good long while. This model will close out my T.rex model creation bucket list, so I hope it is well received.
This one stars "Buio" (which means Dark or Darkness in Italian), a massive, robust, grizzled old tyrannosaur who has led a long life of conflict and bares the scars to prove it. This rex features tough, abused, and irritated skin, scars all over, an amputated finger, and boils and pathologies aplenty.
In this diorama (entitled initially "Stand Your Ground II), Buio is witnessed wailing at an as-yet-unknown enemy. I had originally planned to have him standing over a hadrosaur corpse (that he is defending), but then I realized that that concept is pretty well played-out. There are already a few models on the market with beautiful hadrosaur corpses (I never thought I'd say something like that). So, I decided to pivot. I am working on another Idea now that I am pretty excited by, and the title will likely change as well. It was suggested by my friend, Gregor. Thanks, Gregor; I think this might prove to be something special.
I tend to work on multiple projects at once, so while the other projects I mentioned are not waiting for the debut of the Buio piece, it will likely be the next to hit the shelves.
Here are some teaser shots- details of Buio in progress:

OTHER NEWS:
1) Keep an Eye out for the Fall edition of Prehistoric Times Magazine. It is a magazine always worth reading, but in this issue, Mike will review one of Ancient Era Artistry's 1:35 scale, "Right Where it Ends" torosaurus combatant diorama model kits. I am dying to see what he thought. Subsequently, in the winter issue, Sean Kotz will be showing off his painted version of the kit, and discussing his experience while painting. I cannot wait to see his work!
2) Speaking of amazing paintwork, it has been Christmas in September at the "Ramieri Compound" (my house) lately. I sent a bunch of models far and wide, looking for some great paintwork to help market my work. I sent boxes to Thailand, Spain, Belgium, China, and Missouri. Most of them are still in progress, but I've seen the results of a few. I am in love. Here they are in the order that I received them. What do you guys think?
